Midfield - some headway 3 out - no impression from 2 out (enq held into the running and riding of the gelding - which raced in mid-division throughout before staying on under considerate handling at times in the home straight to finish fifth of fourteen runners - beaten by 13 lengths. The rider and the trainer's rep were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer examined the gelding post-race and had nothing to report. Rider stated his instructions were to jump off midfield - ensure the gelding settled and get him to run well. Jockey explained that the pace was fairly steady - but the gelding travelled nicely and jumped pretty well in the main - other than ballooning the third last hurdle. He continued by saying that the gelding lost ground approaching the home turn when trapped on the heels of a rapidly weakening rival - however after eventually being able to switch right-handed the gelding had recovered quickly enough. Jockey added that shortly after producing the inefficient jump three out - the gelding had made a respiratory noise and this continued intermittently for the remainder of the contest. Jockey further added that he had given the gelding a reminder both after jumping the second last and last hurdles - however indicated he was also focussed on keeping the bit up in the gelding's mouth to assist with his breathing but he felt confident that his mount had obtained the best possible placing in the circumstances. Trainer's rep confirmed the instructions and expressed satisfaction with the manner in which the gelding had been ridden - particularly given that the ground had deteriorated following rainfall earlier in the day - which may not have played to the gelding's strengths)(tchd 50/1)
